2012...a year of goals

I have never been a believer in New Years Resolutions...seems like a short term fix for problems we have. I am all about setting goals to accomplish to make our lives better.

In the past I have set a few goals that I have wanted to accomplish, but always seems to get sidetracked by other. 2012 will be a different story for me. I have had lots of time during my job "hiatus" to think about the things I want to do and accomplish.

Not only am I going to set goals, but I am going to make them public via this blog and keep an ongoing update. Some of these may seem trivial to those of you reading this, but each of these is important to me for one reason or another.

1. Exercise everyday of 2012...whether walking, running, gym, swimming.
2. Lose (and keep off) at least 30 pounds
3. Read the entire Bible ( the One Year Bible is an amazing resource)
4. Read at least one new book each month
5. Learn one new skill each quarter of the year
6. Do something good for someone else at least once a day (365 days of giving)
7. Spend more time volunteering
8. Spend more one-on-one time with each of my children
9. Write a new blog at least once per week.
10. Spend more quiet time in reflection and prayer.

Ok so maybe this is the lazy or cheap way out, but because of certain situations...my darling wife and I opted not to send out Christmas cards, pictures or the obligatory Christmas letter. Inspired by my friend Cindy Huber, this year I will be sharing with all of you the "Year That Was" for the Kurozawa's

Going to try to much not to focus on the "Jimmy did this, Jane went here, etc" but with four children it's hard not to do.

The underlying theme of Kurozawa 2011 was overcoming challenges and staying strong in our faith. (Seems to be a theme every year)
2011 was a year where we learned as a family how to do things more modestly, much like a great percentage of the country. While we had to make some sacrifices, we still enjoyed a number of things this year.

Thanks to some great programs, Mia and Noah were able to enjoy some wonderful summer camps through Elmbrook Church and TimberLee Christian Center. Mia actually finally got the opportunity to be a volunteer at Camp Vertical this coming year.

As you all know, my job with the Milwaukee Wave was eliminated back in April...which led to a summer and fall of searching, sacrificing...but most importantly trusting heavily in God. This ended up being (and continuing to be) one of the greatest challenge of my life, but the support of Holly and our church has been amazing. This 8 month "hiatus" has given me a lot of time to reflect and re-focus on what I want to do moving forward (this is still an on-going process as I am still trying to figure out what path I am meant to take)

Despite the lack of employment, the year was filled with a number of high points.
The biggest is the expectation of Kurozawa #5 (in early February). There have been a number of people that were surprised, shocked and question the decision to have another child. To answer any of that I simply say "If God wants it to happen, it will happen. WE trust in what He wants for us"
Another was the Wave winning a championship in April (while I was still with the team). It was bitter sweet, but every time I look at the Championship Ring I have, I remember the good times with the team, the fun Noah had getting to know the players while working on the bench for the home games and the relationships I built with a number of the dedicated Wave fans.

Sports were a heavy focal point for our family, as Mia continued on with the West Suburban Y Sharks Swim Team and Noah with a variety of different soccer teams, but I will get back to that later. It is a true blessing to have kids that are excelling in sports they love.

Overall 2011 was a year that I will remember for certain things, but would rather forget for others. In the end, everything our family has gone through has only made us stronger and closer to God. Most importantly, it will make 2012 seem even sweeter when we accomplish great things in the new year!

After many months of debating, I have now made JonKurozawa.com live.
For the time being it will still be based through BlogSpot.com, but soon it will be a stand alone site.

The new site will feature my blog for The Edge of Sports, links to Twitter and Facebook and a link for the Edge of Sports broadcasts on BlogTalkRadio. I will also be posting pictures, videos and much more.

This will be the first stage in the online transformation of Jon Kurozawa

4th Annual Kurozawa Kids Christmas Wish Drive

Mia (6th grade) and Noah (4th grade) have enjoyed supporting the Milwaukee Rescue Mission the past few years, being able to bring smiles to children and families who are going through difficult times, but none of it has been possible with out the support and generosity of our friends and family.

This year Mia and Noah welcome their younger sister Isabela (Kindergarten) into the fold.

This year the donation drive is coordinated through @AMillion4Kids, meaning this year we are also able to accept cash donations.

Time for a little clarification on a few items from my last blog concerning Rob and his children…

1. His power was shut off a few months back. Yes I am fully aware of the WE Energies policies of not shutting power and heat between November 1 and March 1, but I am investigating whether they will turn previously cut off utilities back on after that time.
2. I know there are a lot of people going through similar circumstances this season…and I sincerely hope each and every person gets help. This one is close to my heart and I am willing to do anything for my friend and his children.

Now is the time to make something happen…I am looking for help in putting together a fundraiser…maybe as simple as a Tweet-up type event at a restaurant or family friendly venue, maybe a few silent auction items and a small cover charge.

Seems like I am always promoting something, whether it is for work or something for my kids…but this is something that I hope everyone considers helping with. Doesn’t matter what it is or how much it is, every little bit will help.

My promise to everyone that reads this…every single penny of money raised will got to the things that need to be taken care of…

Update on my friend...help desperately needed

Earlier this week I posted about my friend Rob and his children and the help they need. I wanted to update all of you...and let you know the seriousness of the situation.

Rob and his children spent the day with our family for a Thanksgiving weekend celebration. It was at this time, later into the evening that we realized the gravity of the situation.

Once again his power (and heat) has been shut off, and he will not have any income coming in until after the first of the year (he works a part-time seasonal job and there are no hours available.
He has been applying for assistance and looking for additional work, but he has had little to no success.

Friends...I am asking you once again to help. Rob is trying to re-build his life for his children, get onto the path that we lead to a meaningful life for them.

They can not get started without some help...lots of it. My wife and I are doing what we can, but honestly we cannot do it alone.

I am going to directly ask....we need financial donations to help them get the following:
1. A new place to live (preferably a 2-3 bedroom apt that is not falling apart)
2. Caught up on their electric/heating so they can have power and heat
3. a stable job with income that can at least cover their bills

Yes I know there are thousands of others that need help...but this is my friend...someone that is dear to our family.

I need help coordinating some sort of a fundraiser for them in the next few weeks, plus the obvious financial contributions to get the ball rolling for them NOW.

This is a tough season to be asking for help, with so many organizations looking for help.

I have faith in the power of social media and the hearts of others. Please please please help Rob and his children

Update on my friend...help desperately needed

Earlier this week I posted about my friend Rob and his children and the help they need. I wanted to update all of you...and let you know the seriousness of the situation.

Rob and his children spent the day with our family for a Thanksgiving weekend celebration. It was at this time, later into the evening that we realized the gravity of the situation.

Now our family focus goes to helping others, but primarily one family this holiday season.

Rob has been a friend for 25 years and is going through a situation I cannot imagine.
A single dad raising two young daughters, left in a financial mess thanks to a disastrous relationship, trying to get custody of his stepson who is in the foster care system.

Living in an apartment with a landlord that does not care about his tenants or their safety, limited income dues to employment troubles, and recently had his power shut off due to months of being able to pay.

Our family wanted to “adopt” Rob and his daughters this Christmas to make sure the girls get a visit from Santa, but getting them presents doesn’t seem to be the right thing to do when they are in such need.

Once again I turn to you, my friends, colleagues and social media family. You came to our aid in July, helped out the amazing family of @TeecycleTim…can we do it one more time?

The need here is immense: a new place to live, a job, money to help get caught up on utilities. I am personally asking for your help to give the greatest Christmas gift we can give Rob and his family.

I am working on arranging a bank account for donations to go to, but I need your help.
With a combined 1,900 friends on Twitter and Facebook, plus another 500 connections on LinkedIn, I figure we could all make a major impact with just a few dollars each.

Give...care...help (an update on the Journey of Life)

A few days ago I was inspired to start writing the “Journey of Life” blog…but I was hit with another inspiration that is changing my vision for this blog, at least for the next 8 weeks.

These final two months of 2010 will be filled with thoughts of Thanksgiving and Christmas, two holidays that many of us have begun to take for granted. This is a time of the year that my wife and I have worked over the past few years to inspire our children to care for others and give more than they receive.

With that in mind, I cannot write a blog that is focusing in on my life.

In the spirit of the “Give This New Year Away” blogs from earlier this year, I will be dedicating the next 8 weeks to focusing on others in need.

There will be suggestions of ways to give back, stories of triumph during the holidays, listings of volunteer opportunities and special events to participate in. Plus I will feature people and families that may need our help in one way or another.

This will be something unlike anything I have done before…but I look forward to sharing with you and hopefully inspiring you, while I inspire my children.

Give...care...help (an update on the Journey of Life)

A few days ago I was inspired to start writing the â€œJourney of Lifeâ€ blogâ€¦but I was hit with another inspiration that is changing my vision for this blog, at least for the next 8 weeks.

These final two months of 2010 will be filled with thoughts of Thanksgiving and Christmas, two holidays that many of us have begun to take for granted. This is a time of the year that my wife and I have worked over the past few years to inspire our children to care for others and give more than they receive.

With that in mind, I cannot write a blog that is focusing in on my life.

Season of change...the Journey of Life.

Inspiration for writing comes from many different places...personal experiences, reading something, seeing something on TV.

My first blog post in a few months is inspired by a few things. This morning I received an email about the 20th anniversary of a website that I frequent. Recently I have been reflective on life, experiences, successes, failures. Reconnecting with an old friend from two decades ago, someone that was very influential during a difficult time in my life. All of these things have inspired me.

This year I turned 40, sort of a turning point in my life. I have been doing a lot of reflecting, thinking about the past...the good, the bad, the mistakes I have made, the great decisions. Looking back...twenty years ago, the midway mark of my life to this point...was the ending of one part and the beginning of another.

Twenty years ago, I was at the lowest point of my life, not sure what I was going to do or where I was going to go. Thanks to a high school friend coming to my aid and the support of two dear friends, I was able to refocus and begin to to get my life back on track. A new chapter began.

Leading up to that "new chapter" were days, weeks and months of heartbreak, uncertainty and regrets. I will openly admit to the entire world...there have been things I have done in my life I am not very proud of. I have lied, hurt people, betrayed people I have called my friends. I wish I could apologize to everyone that I have wronged.

If not for two people, I would not have made it back to where I could "re-start" my life. My best friend and blood brother Rob was there for me through the good and bad, went down the highway of life and hit every bump in the road with me. If not for an argument over something that best friends should not argue over, Rob and I would be as close as we were in our youth. I regret the road I took Rob down in our reckless youth...the troubles I led him through.

The other person is someone I will never forget, can never thank enough for all that she did for me. Kim and I met under less than normal circumstances, teenagers from completely different backgrounds with nothing in common. A chance early morning meeting led to a unique friendship...one that opened my eyes, mind and heart to a whole new world. Kim was there at the darkest night of my life, pulling me in from the edge. She was the voice that brought me home from halfway across the country at a time when I was ready to leave it all, run from what I needed to face. For 20 years, a true angel in my life was lost because of my own ignorance and stupidity, but thankfully we have re-connected. But lost is the friendship that was so special to me.

Why do I share this with all of you know? I have been criticized over the past year for the candidness I display and how open I am with things that go on in my life. Though I have made many mistakes in my life, regret some of the things I have done...I am not ashamed to admit who I am, the struggles I am going through.

I am know for being an active member of the Twitter community, as the loud and sometimes obnoxious MPTV Auction guy, the voice of numerous sports and radio broadcasts, among other things. But how many people know the "Real" Jon Kurozawa?

Outside of my beautiful wife of 14 years (whom I met at the beginning of the "new chapter" I mentioned earlier...only a few know some of the revealing stories of my life.

It's time for the world to get to know who I really am...where I came from, who I am, what I am all about. You see memoirs written by famous people later in life...I will share the past, present and future with each of you...one story at a time.

The next chapter in the life story of Jon continues and I would like all of you to join me...for all the ups and downs, smiles and tears, joy and pain. In the process, share with me your stories of triumph and tragedy...let us lift each other up and encourage as we all go on this journey of life.

Pay It Forward..the continuation

Thank you to everyone that has read this blog over the past week plus.
This has been an amazing ride, but it is just beginning.

I wrote about Paying It Forward, as a Thank You to all those that stepped forward in faith and helped my family. Over the past week I have read the stores of @teecycletim and @robertjames1 (both from Twitter) the struggles they are facing and the amazing stories of the Milwaukee community stepping up to aid them.

Based on what has happened (and the fact my wife decided to throw in the movie "Pay It Forward")I want to see this through and really take it to the next level.

Much like my topics of "Give This New Year Away" have been meant to encourage..I want my vision for the "Pay It Forward Project" to do the same.

Will you please consider joining me on this journey, one that will hopefully begin a positive revolution in our community!

What a week this has been…if you had told me 7 days ago all that would have transpired in this time, I would have laughed in your face.

Last Thursday night, I was feeling like I was at one of the lowest points of my life (but believe me there have been lower). Our mortgage company bearing down on us, I totaled our van and our basement was flooding.

After a weird moment of clarity in the midst of things (and after numerous offers for help) I decided to create a blog post, what has now become not only a Twitter trending topic, but now the inspiration for an upcoming local article (more details on that later)

One of my good friends, and someone who has been a mentor and inspiration for me over the last 6 years described me as “Milwaukee’s George Bailey”. I was and still am extremely humbled by the comment. When I envision Jimmy Stewart’s character in “It’s a Wonderful Life” I think of the young man who gave up his dreams and ambitions to stay in Bedford Falls, run his father’s building and loan, and in the end helping and positively effecting the lives of many in his town.

Over my life (especially the last 20 years) I have prided myself on helping where I can, volunteering, offering support…while trying to stay out of the “spotlight” (OK the Channel 10 auction is the exception…lol). I guess during that time I have either not been as humble as I thought I was, or more people that I realize have been paying attention to what I have been doing.

That’s what makes what happened starting Saturday even more amazing to me. As I posted our “request” for $1 each from my social media friends, I could have never imagined the response that came in. To date, we have been blessed with over $1,900, meaning I will be going to the bank for the first cashiers check for our mortgage company (which I will be posting a picture of on Twitter right before I send it)

Along with the financial donations, we have been blessed with a few amazing offers as well to help us with our vehicle needs.
More importantly, this has opened my eyes even wider to the needs of others in our community. Two Twitter friends come to mind, who have experience huge losses in the last month.
@RobertJames1 of First Priority Printing saw his building burn down after a tragic lightning strike in Mequon about a month ago. @Teecycle_Org had his house suffer catastrophic flood damage.

These are two of the many stories we are all hearing about, and I feel they are much worse that the situation that my family is in.

We all know others, people that aren’t followed by hundreds of people on Twitter and Facebook, people that aren’t using social media to let people know of their situations. I feel called to help these people in anyway I can.

If you know of anyone that needs help, get the word out, take some time to offer help (doesn’t always have to be money). Offer to make them dinner. If they have kids, offer babysitting for a few hours. Cut their lawn for them so they can get a break. Anything would be appreciated I am sure.
Milwaukee has shown me personally how amazingly caring they can be…let’s show the world what we can do and start a revolution of Paying It Forward!!

Update on our situation and some clarification!

Great Sunday morning!!
First of all let me thank all of you for the love and support you have shown my family. It is times like these that really make you realize how special the world can be.
I do need to offer a little clarification on my last blog post, because it has taken on a life of its own.
Yes..we need to pay a lump sum to our mortgage company ($2100 by August 3 and then 3 subsequent payments of $1100 between Sept-Nov.) to halt the beginning of foreclosure proceedings. With my current work situation, this has been a struggle, but we are working this out.
Yes...we need help to be able to obtain a new vehicle for the family (since I totaled the other one on Thursday). We are talking with someone about a used minivan for about $2,000

That's where the $4,000 number came in...but somehow that number came up as the number that was needed for the house.
I have been 100% open and honest during this situation...here's where we are:
The main priority is a vehicle for us...we will only be able to have the loaner for a few more days. The house is a very close 2nd...as we had figured that we could probably scrape up the money for the payment, but have to let a few other things go to do it.
The money that has been donated to this point has relieved a huge burden of trying to figure out what will get paid...and for that we are extremely grateful.

The amazing support we have received...it literally is like the final minutes of "It's A Wonderful Life" when the whole town comes to the aid of George Bailey (Thanks DC for the reference to this).

I promise you...this is the beginning of something great. A few people have mentioned paying it forward...that is definitely not a question. Our family has always helped where we can, when we can...despite financial hardships. We are dedicated to doing more, more often.

Once again...from our entire family we say THANK YOU!! For everyone that has forwarded our story, has told their friends and have given the $1 (or more).

To close...while this has been amazing, please remember there are families that are in much worse situations than ours. I am fortunate enough to have a large network of friends via social media. Many families have been devastated by the recent flooding and have lost years of memories, thousands of dollars in possessions and much more.

Our family needs your help

This is hard for me to do, especially in a time when so many families are struggling financially and many more have been flooded in SE Wisconsin.
Desperate times require us to humble ourselves and ask for the help of others.

Within the last 8 days, our house has been flooded twice, our minivan (and sole family vehicle) was totaled in an accident and we found out we have 10 days to pay a large lump payment to our mortgage company. For those of you that know me and my work situation, you know this is difficult for us to handle. We have been blessed by help and offers from some amazing people.

We are in a situation where we need to come up with about $4,000 quickly. Due to lack of income and tough decisions...our credit is no good for loans.

I have over 1,100 friends on Twitter, 575 on Facebook and over 200 connections on LinkedIn. This is what I am asking...
If each of my friends on each of these social sites donated $1 each...well it would help us tremendously.
Our main goal is to get a new (ok a good used and running) minivan to transport our entire family.

Food pantries have become a resource for an increasing number of families, supplying them with necessary items to be able to feed them.
Like many organizations of this nature rely on not only donations, but volunteers.
Sorting, packing and distributing are a number of the things that food pantries need to do. Without volunteers, people can not get served.
Find a local food pantry...whether it is one of the larger ones in you city or a small church or community based one...contact them and see what help they need. One day a month would be a huge help for them.
Take it a step further and organize a group from work, your church or even friends and family and go together a day to volunteer.

What a great time to help with new growth by planting flowers...at home, at someone else's home, at a business...there are many places to do it.

Get your family together and plant flowers for an elderly neighbor or at a retirement community.

Work with a group at your church and plant a garden at your church.

Get your company to coordinate planting flowers in the city, on a boulevard or median flower plot.

Get a tree seedling (or more) and plant them...creating a legacy for your family (and helping the environment at the same time)

Give This New Year Away #29 - Say YES to the kid's fundraisers

Spring is the time of renewal; grass greening, trees budding, flowers growing.

It is also a time when we begin to see more fundraising efforts from kids (much like fall)
Personally I have seen a couple in recent weeks…Girl Scout Cookie tables at the grocery store (which I have a love for since my oldest daughter is a 5th grade Jr. Girl Scout) and Little League Baseball candy bar sales.

I know a lot of times we get annoyed with the number of these selling opportunities we see, and it may seem like we are getting bombarded. Please remember one thing (especially those of you without children) lots of times, these fundraisers are required or necessary. Many Little League organizations require players to sell a certain amount of candy (don’t blame the kids)

Though we can’t say yes to every single one of these (unless you just won the $258 million Powerball), consider saying yes to at least a few. IF you can’t buy, don’t just blow the kids off. Stop for a moment, find out more about what the kids are selling and if you can’t buy, respectfully decline.

Also…now is the time that more and more charity run/walks and events pop up. Pick one or two (especially if they are presented by family or friends) and consider offering some financial support. Even a $5 or $10 pledge can make a difference.

I know first hand how rough things can be financially, but one or two dollars here or there to benefit a group or organization is much more important that that bottle of soda, bag of chips or cup of over priced coffee is!

**Special note to those of you with kids that do a lot of fundraising activities: remember the people that buy from you. If someone that has bought from you comes around selling something…make an effort to purchase from them. Personally this gets a little tough for our family (considering how many Girl Scout cookies and Cub Scout wreaths have been sold by my kids) but we do our best. It’s not a one way street!

Give This New Year Away #28 - Work on cleaning up your neighborhood/community #EarthDay

Today is the 40th anniversary of Earth Day, a day when we are all supposed to remember the amazing resource we have been given with our planet and do what we can to protect it and save it.

One of the easiest way we can do something to help it to look right at home, in our yards, neighborhoods and immediate communities. One of the things our family loves to do (when the weather cooperates) if go for a walk around our neighborhood.

Take a half hour or more today to do the same…go for a walk. But along with doing this, bring a couple plastic grocery bags with you. If you see some trash, pick it up.

This may seem like a small mundane task, but if each of my 1,000+ followers on Twitter, 500+ friends on Facebook all did this, then encouraged all of their friends…pretty soon we have thousands of people all over the country taking a walk and cleaning up.

Go a step further, get a group together…from work, church or anywhere you participate. Find a local park to clean up. Go into a neighborhood that needs help. Go along a river and cleanup.

Do your kids play soccer, baseball…participate in scouting? Get those groups involved too.

Lots of simple little ways that we can make an impact. And of course there is always Reduce, Reuse and Recycle…the 3 R’s of making our planet a little better.

Give This New Year Away #27 - Volunteer your time and talent with Junior Achievement

When I was first approached 6 years ago about volunteering for Junior Achievement, I flashbacked to when I was in 6th grade and meeting once a week in the evening and working on building a business with other students. I had positive memories of the experience but didn't think I had much to offer.
In the 20+ years since I was first involved on that level, Junior Achievement has changed and dramatically improved. Now the JA programs is geared towards grades K-12, with in classroom programming and activities that teach kids business and economic principles, entrepreneurship and important skills needed in the business world.

All of this is great, but it cannot be done without volunteers. I have personally volunteered in classrooms from Kindergarten all the way up to high school and have realized how easy the program is for volunteers. One hour per week, 5-10 weeks (depending on the grade level) and all the materials and curriculum are provided for you.
No matter what field of work you are in, you can bring personal experiences with you to share with the kids.
Kids of all ages love to hear stories of where people work and what they do...especially if it is something that they have never heard of.
It's not that hard to volunteer that one hour per week...talk to your boss and maybe you can get a team of people from your company to do it.
You will not regret the time you spend helping build the future leaders of our great country.

Mail...something that most times we dread. Bills. Junk. Stuff we don't want to see.
How happy do you get when you receive something that is not asking for money, that is not selling something?
Christmas cards and birthday cards usually brighten the spirits of us all when we get them in the mail. But what about the rest of the year.
There are many people in our lives that we should say Thank You to, but we tend to forget about it.
The postman, the paper boy, garbage collectors. How about the cashier at the gas station you always stop in to that greets you like a close friend.
The waitress at your favorite restaurant that always goes the extra mile for you.
There are many people that we should thank...that would appreciate that extra little recognition.
Go out and buy an inexpensive package of Thank You cards and keep them with you. Next time you see someone that you want to thank, joy down a quick little note of appreciation...tell them why they are special, and let them know.

Leave an enormous tip for your server after a meal in a restaurant. Who knows what kind of day that person has had? That little gesture might make a big difference in his or her day. In fact, I'll take this one a bit further. Say you happen to sit down in a restaurant and it is obvious you server has had it. Maybe the service is so poor that you find yourself tempted to skip the gratuity all together. Well in that case give more!! And don't worry about the extra tip validating the server's rudeness. That's not up to you. You never know what someone may be going through. People are hurting all around you and this is just another small way you can make a big impact.

Remember, God doesn't give grace only to those who deserve it. If that were the case, none of us would receive it. We are called to give because Christ first gave to us.

If you know of a family going through any of these things or similar situations, offer to bring them dinner. It does not need to be anything elaborate. A pan of lasagna, all the fixings for tacos, a casserole.
I know personally after the birth of our last daughter, when friends from church brought us dinners, how great it was especially for my wife.
It was not a major endeavor, but an extremely appreciated act.
The simple act of offering a dinner for another family, who may not even realize they need it.

It doesn't matter the situation, be that supportive force in that person's life, but also be that "moral compass" that if they slip, you are there to get them back in the right direction.
This is a role that can be stressful, yet rewarding. It is not meant to be the person that is always nagging, but more that extra set of eyes and ears to help make sure the path is being followed.

I have been a donor since the age of 18, when the nursing home I was volunteering at through my high school was having a blood drive.
Many people do not realize the impact they can make by taking 1 hour out of their lives to donate blood. Yes it can be somewhat uncomfortable, but giving the gift of life is worth the discomfort.
Have you ever known someone that has needed to go to the hospital and has needed a blood transfusion? That could not have happened if someone had not donated blood.
Take the time, give the gift, help save a life.

We all see them...the guy standing on the street corner with the "Will Work For Food Sign" or the woman "Homeless, need help"
Over the last 2 years we have seen a huge increase in the number of people seeking help...because of lost jobs and more.
Many of you may be thinking "well how do I know these people are really not just homeless drunks" etc? We don't, but we need to love by faith, learn to trust.
Maybe that person will take the couple of dollars you give to go by a bottle of cheap wine or something else...but maybe, just maybe that sign of kindness could be the first one that person has seen in a long time and will help lift them up.
Last summer, as I was setting up chairs for my family at the Great Circus Parade in Milwaukee, I had a gentleman approach me. He was obviously down on his luck from his appearance. He stopped and told me his story of needing a State ID to get a job, showed me what looked like an "official" paper from an employer stating that he needed it to get the job. I have always been skeptical of this type of person asking for money, but something hit me to trust him. I asked how much he needed, and he told me $15. I had $10 to give him...I looked at him, told him I normally don't do this, but God is putting it on my heart to trust you and to help you. We talked for a few more minutes, he talk a little about how God is trying to help him...and we parted ways.
Did he really use the money to get his State ID? I will never know. What I do know is that God did place it on my heart to talk to this man, help him and trust him.
Will this be the case 100% of the time? Unfortunately NO, but we need to show trust in our fellow man. Next time you see that person on the street corner asking for help...offer them a couple of dollars. Maybe that simple act will be just enough to help them and get them on the right path once again!

Mom in a parking lot with kids in the minivan and a load of groceries. Elderly man that is struggling to get from the store to car. The woman that seems to be in a hurry.
All examples of people that would benefit from you offering to grab their shopping cart and take it to the corral or back up to the store. Are you limited to who you can offer this simple gift to? Absolutely not.
It's the simplest things that pave the way to good deeds through others. While you are walking into a store, look for that person who is almost done unloading their cart. Walk up and offer to take it back for them...and don't say anything else.

Give This New Year Away #18 - Put Down The Remote, Pick Up A Book

If you are like me...once you get home from a busy day of work, running kids from place to place and who knows what else...you just want to plop down in your favorite chair and zone out to your favorite TV show. Maybe even share that TV time with you kids.

STOP!!!

Put down the remote, grab a couple of books and spend some time reading with your kids. This can be an important bonding time between you and your children. Make a point of making funny faces, goofy noises and really going over board reading the story.

For those of you that don;t have kids...well you can still grab a book. Read up on a topic you are interested in, learn something new or even let your imagination run wild in a fictional title.

Better yet....read the Bible, the greatest book ever written. Take 20 minutes a day and you can knock out the whole bible in a year. There are great online tools to help you get through the bible in a year. There are even specialized "One Year Bibles"

Give This New Year Away #17 - Offer a parent a night out

For those of you that do not have children, this one may not have a lot of value to it.

For those that have children...it is priceless.

Parenting is a full time job, whether you are a stay at home parent (God bless them for the under appreciated job they do every single day) or a two income family, being a parent has no days off.

This is one of the most amazing gifts you can provide a parent (especially single parents). It can be as simple as watching kids for an hour or two so they can go grocery shopping in peace, for a weekend afternoon so they can see a "grown-up" movie, or a date night for the couple that only gets a few minutes once the kids go to bed.

As a husband and father of four children, I would love to have a date night with my wife once a month, but it is next to impossible. Imagine the mother who has an infant, that never gets a break. An hour of peace and quiet without the added stress of a fussy baby. Worth more than anything you can imagine.

Of course this only works if you are comfortable around children and the kids are OK with you being around. But give this gift, more than once (maybe once every other month). Those parents will LOVE you forever (if they don't already!

Give This New Year Away #16-Invite a friend to church

This could be one of the more difficult ones of the year, because the topic of church, religion, faith can be a hard one to discuss with other people when you don't know "where they stand". If you are confortably involved in a church, why not invite that friend that is having difficulties to join you.

I have found that people that have been away from church, for whatever reason, have a difficult time returning to church if they do not feel comfortable. Each church family is different...what they offer for new comers. This is not the place for me to say one church is better than the other.

The process of inviting a friend to church is not one that can be done on the spur of the moment "Hey Jim, wanna come to church with me tomorrow". It is one that will take time to cultivate and lead up to the appropriate time to ask.

Do not be afraid though, reach out to that friend, embrace the opportunity to bring light to a friend's life.

Give This New Year Away #14- Plug the parking meter

Isn't it nice when you receive an unexpected gift?

One thing we have done in the past when our family has been on vacation up north is randomly plug the expired parking meters of vacationers that are busy sight seeing or shopping. In this town $.25 would get you an hour of parking, so it's a small gift but one nonetheless.

If you are walking to your office, running out for coffee or lunch or just taking a walk during the day, if you see a car parked at an expired meter, toss a quarter or two into it. You may never knnow why they let that meter lapse, but most likely you will make a positive impact on that persons day but dropping a quarter in that meter.

It's not about the reasons or the rewards...its just about doing something good for another.

Give This New Year Away #12- Skip that coffee or soda, donate the money

If you are like me, caffeine is a regular part of your day. Coffee, soda, lattes...they are liquid energy for you to get through your busy day.

Have you ever stopped to think about how much money you spend each day on these drinks? Each week? Month? How much did you spend last year? If you are one of this people that stops everyday at the chain shops...that adds up quick.

Change your habits, cut out just one soda out of that vending machine, one coffee from the coffee shop and put the money in a jar. At the end of the month donate the saved money to a local charity. It may not seem like a lot, but every donation helps. Do this on 2, 4 or 6 month cycles.

Increase the number of things you cut back on. Like to grab that afternoon snack from the vending machine? Pack a piece of fruit instead.

Do you smoke? Improve your health, save a bunch of money and make a positive impact in other loves with the money.
Positive changes start with small steps...start taking those small steps today.

Has this ever happened to you? You've been at an event where you had to wear a name tag. Hours after the event, you're talking to a stranger and suddenly that person calls you by name. Huh? How do they know my name? Then it dawns on you. I forgot to take off my name tag! Get into the habit of looking for the name tag of every checkout person you see. Then wait for the cashier's smile or startled expression when you actually use his or her name. Calling someone by name is a guft that says "I'm interested in who you are." Every time you see each other, gather another detail while the person is scanning your soda or counting out your change from the drive-thru order.

One woman who started with the name tag connection at the checkout counter says that she knows that Jill the cashier "has a black Swatch watch exactly like mine though hers is misplaced and needs a battery, plays piano, loves Odwalla juices, prefers cooler weather, and enjoys art galleries."

The economic downturn has effected many people...jobs lost, foreclosures increased, homelessness has skyrocketed.

Homeless shelters are seeing an overabundance of people of all ages, including families that are in need. Along with beds and supplies, homeless shelters need volunteer help. If you are reading this, you most likely have a warm home, a bed to sleep in, comfort that those that are homeless do not have.

Not sure how you can help....here is some information provided by the National Coalition for the Homeless:

Remember that service providers need help at all times of year—not just holidays—and will appreciate regular volunteers who can be counted on to show up.
Here are some ways you might help:

Work at a shelter. Take an evening or overnight shift. Help with clerical work such as answering phones, typing, filing, or sorting mail. Serve food, wash dishes, or sort and distribute clothes.

Help build or fix up houses or shelters. Check with your local public housing authority, or find the nearest chapter of Habitat for Humanity by calling (800) 422-4828 or visiting http://www.habitat.org.

Offer professional skills directly or assist in job training. Direct service providers may be able to use many services and skills, including secretarial, catering, plumbing, accounting, management, carpentry, public relations, fundraising, legal, medical, dentistry, writing, child care, counseling, tutoring, or mentoring.

Share hobbies. Teach your hobbies to a group of people staying at a homeless shelter. Ask them about their hobbies and have them teach you.

Invite people experiencing homelessness to a community event. Invite people who are experiencing homelessness to a worship service, public concert or picnic, city council meeting, etc.

Organize an event at a shelter. Plan an evening program such as a board game or chess night, an open mic poetry reading, a guest storytelling or musical performance, or a holiday party.

Work with children. Assist program directors that are coordinating events such as field trips, picnics or art workshops for children staying in homeless shelters. Find out if there are children who could benefit from tutors or mentors.

Involve others! Encourage your classmates, co-workers, church/synagogue members, or civic club to join or support your efforts.

Encouragement can come in many different forms. It can be a simple gesture, a short conversation or even a pat on the back.

It can more detailed like a letter or email, even a public declaration.

We can all use encouragement during our day, but do we know when someone else needs it?

Open your eyes, focus your hearing. Watch for that co-worker that is struggling. Listen for that friend that is feeling down. Pay attention to others and do not dwell on yourself.

Look in your own house at your spouse and your children. Be a positive force in someone's life everyday offering even simple encouragement....sowing the seeds and creating fertile ground.

Give This New Year Away #8- Give Your Good Stuff Away

If you are like me, you accumulate lots of stuff. New clothes, new toys, lots of books, just lots of stuff. But what do you do with all of the old stuff that begins to fill the drawers, closets and shelves of your house?

There are many great organizations that would gladly take you unwanted (but still good and useful) items:
Goodwill
Salvation Army
Teen Challenge
Milwaukee Rescue Mission
St. Vincent DePaul
your local church
These and many organizations like them thrive off donations of items, from people like you, to help fund their programs.

Take a day to look carefully at the clothes you have, books, CDs, movies, kids toys, thos fancy little gadgets you bought.
If you haven't worn it or used it in a year...Give it away. Someone else can use it and you can help benefit any of these organizations.

Give This New Year Away #7-Feed The Hungry

We have just come out of the holiday season...Thanksgiving, Christmas, New years...holidays that may of us indulge in. Parties and gathering filled with food, treats and more.

2009 saw an astounding increase in the number of people and families that turned to the help of food pantries and other assistance programs. The need has grown, but the response has not. There are many great organizations that help supply these food pantries. in SouthEastern Wisconsin we have Hunger Task Force and Feeding America WI just to name two.

Next time you go grocery shopping, consider picking up a few extra items to donate. Maybe start a food drive at your place of employment, your child's school or your church. The need for food is not seasonal, it is year round.

Next time you have the urge to go out for lunch, why don't you brown bag it. Save that money...in a months time you could save a good amount and donate it to your local food pantry. Skip one coffee, one soda or that afternoon snack out of the vending machine and save that money.

Give This New Year Away #6-Clear the snow

Across the country, many of you are seeing cold and snow, some more than others. Beautiful as the snow may be, for some it can be something that is difficult to deal with. The single mom with little kids, the elderly man that doesn't get around as well as he used to. Maybe its the couple that works two jobs just to make ends meet.

Seeing inches of snow piled up on the sidewalks and driveways can be almost daunting.

Be a good neighbor, shovel the sidewalk for them while you are doing yours. Snowblowing your driveway? Take a few extra minutes and do theirs. This is especially good when you know that neighbor only has a shovel and the snow is heavy and wet. Yes it may be cold and could take you extra time, but imagine how happy someone would feel if they came home and all the snow was gone.

Don't forget about the people that get stuck in the snow...if you can lend a hand, stop and offer assistance. Wouldn't you want someone to do the same for you if you needed help??

Give This New Year Away #5-Serve in your church

"Wait a second Jon, you want us to do more than just sit in a pew for an hour each Sunday??"

Yes that is exactly what I am saying. Churches do not just run themselves. The pastors and their support staff cannot do everything themselves.

"I am not biblically sound enough to teach or preach"

Guess what...either am I. But I use my God given gifts to help out. My wife and I, along with our small group, were encouraged three years ago to serve in our church's Children's ministry, helping out one Sunday per month, giving some of the regualr helpers much needed off. This was uncomfortable for some, but 3 years later, most are still helping. It grew so much that a number of our small groups are volunteering.

No matter the size of your church, there are opportunities to help. Good at fixing things? I bet they could use you? Excellent typing skills? The office could use help. Love children? Read bible stories to the Sunday School. Love to greet people? Become a greeter or usher.

One or two hours a month...not a lot of time, but imagine the impact if even a dozen people joined you. Don;t be afraid to step up and help out. You don't have to feel obligated to volunteer for everything that is asked of you...pick and choose what is right for you. But most importantly, start serving.

It is another one of those simple ways of Honoring God, but serving in His house!

Give This New Year Away #4- Be a teacher!

You are never too old to learn.

You can always turn every situation into a teaching moment.

If you are a parent, this is an ongoing process, always teaching your children…rights and wrongs, what to do and not to do. Not only is this something a parent can do with their children, but each of us can do this on a daily basis. Teach your children about your job…what you do, what you do to succeed. Stay at home moms??? You have a very important job...teach you kids about the things you do during the day.

No kids? What about your spouse? Teach them about something you are interested in? Teach your parents…help them with the internet, their DVR or another piece of technology they are struggling with.

In our work lives, we can teach as well. Help that coworker next to you that is struggling with a program, document or project. Teach them how to find new clients, make more appointments, be more productive with their time.

There are many ways that we can all reach out and teach others around us…we just have to open our eyes to the opportunities.

Instruct the wise, and they will be even wiser. Teach the righteous, and they will learn even more.

Give This New Year Away #3-Hold That Door

Hold the door open for others

Today is Monday January 4th, which means many of you will be returning to work after an extended holiday weekend or a longer break. Gone is the lost art of holding the doors for people.

I remember as a young boy, my grandfather instilling in me "make sure you always hold the door open for a lady". I think it goes far beyond that. We are always in such a rush to get where we need to go, we don't look to see who is behind us.

Stop for a moment and hold the door open for not just one person, but for a handful of people. Same thing goes for the elevator door. Don't just ignore the person that you see racing to catch the elevator...make sure you hold it for that person. This is something that can be done more than once, make it a habit. Slow down and help that person...whether you know them or not.

Give This New Year Away #2-The coffee is on me

Pay for the coffee for the person behind you in line.

Much like #1, this could come as difficult for some of you, but imagine the feeling you would get if the person at the counter said to you "Someone has already paid for this for you". Pay for that cup of coffee for that person behind you. Give them a little liquid gift. Sounds pretty simple doesn't it.

Guess what...someone else has already done that for you, has paid the price for someting for you...Jesus Christ. When He was nailed to the cross, He not only died, but paid the price for all of our sins. The debt has been paid!

I'm not saying that paying for someone's coffee will be the greatest gift they have ever received, but it could be the spark to light their day. The greatest gifts don't always have to be large, wrapped with a big red bow and be given on birthdays, Christmas or anniversaries.

Best way to do this is quietly, without attention being drawn to you, but in most cases you will need to say something to the person simply to make sure the bill is paid in full. Watch the reaction you get...but you don;t need to say anything other than, "This one is on me!"

How simple can our words be when used to make other feel good?
When you are having a rough day, doesn't a simple but nice gesture make you feel better?

For some this first one could be difficult or uncomfortable...but its really now that hard. Think about the retiree who bags your groceries, the teenager working behind the counter at your favorites fast food restaurant, the man that works in the booth at the parking lot you park in everyday. There are many opportunities to share a few uplifting words with people that probably never hear them.

Say them with sincerity and imagine the warmth you can add to someones days with just a few pleasant words from the heart.

With God's Help we will do mighty things. Psalm 60:12

2010, Give This New Year Away

Resolutions...we all have good intentions when we make them at the beginning of the year...to lose weight, to read more, to give up smoking...the list goes on and on.
How many of us really accomplish what we set out to do at the beginning of the year (I do know one person that has been successful giving up something for an entire year for the last few years!)

I have mentioned it a couple times over the past few weeks about the inspiration I got from Christian singer/songwriter Matthew West and his book "Give This Christmas Away", which listed 101 ways for you to inspire others. I loved the book and thought "Why just do this at Christmas? Why not all year round?"

Many of the 101 things listed in West's book can be done anytime of the year, but I am inspired to to at least one thing each day in 2010, but to also make it a quest to have as many people join me as I can.

Call it a Revolution...to give to others, to Pay it Forward, to live like Jesus by loving others even in the simplest ways.

I will be posting and Tweeting each day about different ways to give to others, many that won;t cost a penny, some that will require spending a little money, but all that can impact one or more people. Most of these can be done by anyone no matter that age, sex, financial status, etc.

Our country has been filled with so much negativity that it's time to turn it around, make a positive change one person at a time.

Whether one person or one million people join me doesn't matter...this is my quest for 2010. No looking for recognition, pats on the back or Thank Yous. The reward I get is know I have done something to brighten the day, week or life of another that may need it.

For any of you that have followed the ups and down, peaks and valleys or good and bad of 2009...you know that it was a difficult year for the Kurozawa family. From job loss to financial problems, van repairs and health issues...we ran what seemed like a gambit of issues.

Looking back at everything, it was frustrating, stressful, almost forgettable year. I wouldn't wish it on anyone.
Conversely, we were blessed with many good things too. Overall my kids were healthy, we were able to take a family trip to Disney World over Easter (though when I returned to work the following week I was laid off :), despite financial troubles we never went hungry, without shelter, heat or the other basic necessities of life. i do have a new job with a company I love, have made lots of new people through social media and have broadened my skill set.

All in all our year was one of the toughest we have had as a family and it has not ended on the brightest of note, but I know that God has blessed us and continues to everyday. Some days it is hard to remember that when our bank account floats towards $0, when we wonder how we will pay the next bill, or have to tell our kids "no we can't do that because we don't have enough money". I remember it when we are able to do things that many people don't get a chance to do.

My wife Holly's opportunity to sing in a choir with Michael W. Smith, My son Noah and my first Packers game (thanks to my new boss), getting to take my kids to a variety of different concerts, events and shows through good fortune or the kindness and generosity of others.

One of the greatest joys I have gotten this year is seeing the joy in my childrens' eyes when they are rewarded with something simple or when they have learned how important it is to help others in need (more need than we are in).

You cannot place a monetary value on those special moments when your kids talk about wanting to help others, how they want to sacrifice to help someone else.

Based on those moments, and from the inspriration of new friend Matthew West, my next blog post will discuss my vision for 2010. No matter what happens with my job, my money or anything related to that...I will be Giving This New Year Away.

With the grace of God, 2010 will be the best year ever for our family and I hope it is for you too!

2010...no resolutions, just working to change one day at a time

Ah yes, the final week of the year…the time when people reflect on the year that was: successes, failures, missed opportunities. Time to make the New Years Resolutions of how you will live better, be better…only to be forgotten about by January 31.

I myself have been a victim of that over the years (though I do not think I have made a resolution in a few years). This year I am doing something a little different.

Inspired by Christian singer/songwriter Matthew West’s book “Give This Christmas Away” I will be chronicling something different every single day of 2010. I will no divulge what the content will be until December 31, but it will be 365 days of purpose (my apologies to Rick Warren)

Give This Christmas Away

We are two weeks away from Christmas...stores are having sales, shopping carts are full and people are trying to make sure they get everything on their list.

But what about those in need? The ones that will not have a tree with a bottom filled with presents? The lonely that have no one to share the holidays with?

As a family, over the past few years we have tried to help out who we can. I have been truly inspired this season by Matthew West and his new single "Give This Christmas Away" , a song that was inspired the Samaritans Purse program "Operation Christmas Child". Matthew West has taken it to the next level by writing the book "101 Simple and Thoughtful Ways to Give This Christmas Away"

This is not a list of high cost purchase suggestions, but simple things that everyone can do. Think about the impact we could all make but doing small acts of kindness, not just during Christmas but year round.

I encourage you to join me in the quest to make this season better for others, one thoughtful act at a time.

Sales…a difficult job no matter what the economy is like.

There are many experts out there that offer sound advice on the best practices for cold calling, setting up meetings, getting the YES in the meeting, etc.
I am not about to offer this type of advice or insight.

I have had the chance to learn first hand some of the tactics, practices and procedures that do and do not work when trying to get a sale. The other thing I have learned over the past few years is how some decision makers think.

Put yourself into the shoes of the person you are trying to sell to. How many sales calls do they get on a daily basis? How many different pitches do they get from sales people that think they are better than others. How many times do you think this decision maker hears “ This is the product/service that will help you company like no other” or something like that.

One thing I learned early on in my sales career, most decision makers don’t really care what you have to say. They are meeting with your as a courtesy, to stop the overabundance of phone calls from you. Forget about trying to WOW them with the widget, gadget or service you are trying to sell.

The best thing you can do is show them that you care. I don’t mean putting on a façade to make it seem like you are concerned. You need to be genuinely concerned about what they sell, what they offer, what the company does. Many times they get taken aback when you kick things off by asking “What is it that you want your company to accomplish in the nest 12 months”

Sales in general needs to go back to wanting to help others, not sell them on things that may not be in the best interest of their company. In essence, I have lost many sales in my career because I have not been cut throat, ruthless or down right immoral. What I have gained in immeasurable in spreadsheets, sales revenue and commissions. I go home everyday knowing that I did the right thing, feeling like I represented myself and my company well and most importantly created a business relationship that can hopefully flourish in the future.

There will be plenty of times when I do not get the sale, but many of those people that may say NO to what I am offering will remember me as someone ethical, not the a-typical sales person.

3rd Annual Kurozawa Kids Christmas Wish Drive for Milwaukee Rescue Mission

Hello friends….Christmas is right around the corner!

It is time for the 3rd Annual Kurozawa Kids Christmas Wish Drive for Milwaukee Rescue Mission.

Noah (3rd grade) and Mia (5th grade) are working to collect items to make Christmas a little brighter for those at the Milwaukee Rescue Mission.

Over the last two years the response has been great from their classmates at Dixon Elementary, from our church family at Spring Creek Church and from friends. This year the need is even greater.

The Pros and Cons of the 1/2 price gift certificate

Half price gift certificates, Dining Deals, super steals.
Many different names, but these programs have taken America by storm.

Radio stations all over the country have embraced this concept, a great way for them to secure “non-traditional” revenue or NTR. They offer on on-air and internet promotional package in exchange for gift certificates from area businesses. Those certificates are then sold for half price to listeners.

The idea for businesses is to draw new customers in by promoting with these kinds of program, without writing the large check for normal advertising.

As someone that ran one of these programs for 3 years, I have seen the success and the failures. Time to answer some standard questions:

Q: Do these 1/2 price gift certificate programs work?
A: Short answer…yes, but not in every case. There are a few things that determine if it works or not.
First, the type of business offering the certificates. Restaurants have traditionally been the bread and butter of the ½ price programs. Golf and hotels also work. These programs are not meant for everyone. I personally put some businesses on my program that were just wrong.

Q: Are the ½ price programs risk free for my business?
A: Absolutely not. The biggest risk is that every certificate is bought, redeemed and that you do not create return customers. Conversely worst case scenario no certificates are purchased and redeemed.

Q: As a business owner, do I maintain ultimate control over the certificates?
A: If the person implementing the program is doing their job right, then yes. Unfortunately I have personally seen many instances where the business did not get what they were promised by the radio station. For example. one business I worked with had an experience with another company that did not fulfill promises of number of certificates that were to be sold, restrictions on when they could be used; and the business owner was not allowed to proof the certificate before printing.

There are many more questions that could be addressed. If your company is interested in participating in a half price gift certificate program, there are some key things you need to contemplate before jumping in:

1. How will this benefit my company?
2. What is the best audience to reach out to? (which will be covered in another blog)
3. How can I maximize this program to increase my business.

All in all, I truly believe the Half Price gift certificate programs are beneficial for some businesses, if handled correctly and with proper preliminary investigation.

The New Blog, moving forward

Welcome to the new and improved Jon Kurozawa blog.
I had contemplated doing more business on the K6 Marketing blog and keeping this one for personal use. After reading a couple of chapters of Gary Vaynerchuk’s book “Crush It” (Gary of WineLibraryTV fame) I have decided to do both in one location.

One of the biggest issues with starting a new blog is what do I write about? One singular topic, something I am passionate about, random rants? I had to think about this and I came up with one thought. What can I offer the most for that may not be offered by anyone else?

Over the past few years I have gotten a solid understanding of marketing and advertising, what is available to businesses and what some of the challenges are. I have been there on the side of trying to find the best marketing opportunities, as well as being someone pitching ideas as well (actually I am in a similar situation now)

On this blog and the videos I will be producing, I will give my honest opinions on the world of marketing and advertising…what works, what doesn’t, misconceptions and the outright lies that are told by some.

Will this information offend some? Yes (if you are in advertising most likely).
Will this information be relevant? Only if you are open minded and willing to listen to someone else’s opinion.

My goal is to offer what I have learned over my career and provide people and businesses in need with valuable information.

Explanation of the $1 Michael W. Smith Tweet

OK...I know there must be a lot of confusion about the Twitter messages I have posted at @JonKurozawa about my wife Holly, her chance to sing in the choir with Michael W. Smith and the request for $1 donations.

Let me first state...this has nothing to do directly with Michael W. Smith or anyone associated with him. I am thrilled that he is offering the opportunity for 100 people to join him in his choir at the concert at NIU in DeKalb, Illinois next Saturday.

The reason for the $1 donation is request is slightly complicated. My issue is with TicketMaster, who charge outrageous fees on tickets to any event they are involved in.
Michael W. Smith was offering discounted tickets to those singing and their families (a great deal) but the $6 service fee PER TICKET is ridiculous.

Holly wants me to bring our two oldest kids to see this once in a life time opportunity for her...and I agree, but when the price goes from $48 up to $72 in an instant, plus the driving, meals, etc...well lets just say it's tough.

Holly has made numerous sacrifices for me in our 13+ years of marriage, allowing me to do and do things I have wanted to do (sports broadcasts, MPTV auction and more)...I want to give her this chance. She works hard 24/7, 365 days out of the year as the mother of our 4 children...I will not deny her this chance.
The other issues...well i will be 100% transparent....those of you that have been following me know we have had major issues this year with our van. It went back into the shop again today. Another fun expense.
Secondarily you all know I have been working with the Milwaukee Wave, a great organization, with wonderful people to work with. The catch, as anyone that works outside sales knows, its a commission based job which means no money until you bring in money. I am fine with this, but it's a tough time to get sponsorships when the economy is still unstable.

All of that being said...that is why I was asking for 72 of my twitter friends to donate $1 each via Paypal to help Holly go to sing in the Michael W. Smith concert next Saturday. If you do not agree with me, I am sorry to hear that. I do everything I can for my family to be happy, be successful and to have fun. People have gotten annoyed with my pitches for Boy Scout wreath sales and Girl Scout cookie orders, but I am trying to help my kids be successful!

Thanks to everyone that is helping to make a dream come true for my beautiful wife Holly! The same blessing will be returned to you!

Challenges, battles and working towards victory

Everyday we are faced with challenges, some greater than others. It doesn’t matter who you are, where you live or what your circumstances are…you will face challenges.

Throughout my life I have been faced with many that have been debilitating, heart breaking and soul shattering, but no matter how bad things were I was always able to make it through.

For many years I thought it was my will to survive, stubbornness or just good fortune that would help me make it through the difficult times. Let me tell you…none of these is the case.

Anyone that has know me for at least 5 years knows the struggles that I have faced…mostly work and money related. 10 years you get a greater understanding. The few that have known me longer than that no how deep it goes.

Through all of this there has been one constant…not a close friend, not a dedicated family member, but someone much more important…Jesus. OK there I said it. I know it, I believe it…through everything Jesus has been walking by my side. When I have stumbled, taken missteps, fallen down, dragged around, kicked in the mud…you name it Jesus has been there.

Conversely on my highest days, when I have accomplished little and great things…guess what? Jesus has been there too. When I have doubted HE is there. When I have praised and gave thanks HE is there. No matter what HE has always been there.

Why am I sharing this? Because I know many people who are down, feeling lost, wanting to give up…asking “Why is this happening to me?” I have been there, more times than I care to remember. Remember one thing…Jesus is there waiting for you, but HE will not open the door for you…you have to do it yourself.

Everyday I still live with challenges…struggles with work, struggles with money, struggles with family…but no matter what happens, I cannot get down on myself, get angry or be filled with doubt. I have to put my focus on Christ Jesus…that HE is there for me…but I need to reach out to him in the good times and the bad.

2009 has been one of the most difficult that I have faced. Fighting to save a job early in the year, while trying to figure out how to stretch every penny. Losing that job in the spring and trying to figure out what the next step is. Waiting for week after week for unemployment benefits to kick in, praying that we would be OK. Wondering why no one will interview me for a job, despite dozens upon dozens of resumes sent out. Finally having a job offered that I love, but struggling to make sales, find new clients and make money.

Sound like a familiar story?? I am not asking for sympathy because I know there are many others worse off than me and my family. I am thankful every single day for the job I have, the house we live in, the clothes we wear, the van I drive, the food we eat…for our health and safety.

I tell this story as a reminder to myself that I need to continue to push forward with the grace and mercy of Jesus Christ…to continue to walk by faith and not by sight…to continue to battle forward no matter what the enemy may place in front of me to deter me, to slow me down. Also I do this to encourage those of you that have lost hope, are feeling more downs than ups.

The only one that can hold you down is YOU…no one else. Turn your attitude into one of a winner and no one or nothing can stop you…but friends, you must walk with faith, grace and mercy. We can make our own decisions, chose the direction we go, but we do not ultimately have total control. Our paths have been laid out for us, our destination chosen and each chapter of our unique stories have been written, long ago.

The author…The Father…the creator of all things…GOD.

If you do not agree…I am sorry for that. If I have offended you…I do now apologize for this is my belief…in my mind, heart and soul.

An open letter to our elected officials

Dear (insert name of any elected official in the USA)

What have you done for me lately? This is a valid question. As a taxpaying, voting, hard working citizen of the United States of America, what have you personally done for me lately?

I am out of work, I have yet to receive unemployment benefits in almost 3 months since I was laid off, taxes are going up, services are being cut...the list goes on and on.

What are you, an elected official paid for by my tax dollars, doing to help me? It does not matter if you are Democrat, Republican, Independent...what are you doing to help me, Joe Average Citizen?

I see large corporations getting bailed out, billions being sent overseas, more billions being spent on pet projects that make absolutely no sense. time being wasted on resolutions about Michael Jackson...but how is my family of 6 being helped?

Is it because I am not a campaign donor that spends tens of thousands on a table at a fundraising event? Due to the fact that I am not a lobbyist, is that why I am ignored? I am not a multi-millionaire or major star...does this make me less important?

I have always understood the priority of the men and women elected to office in this great country of ours (whether it is city, county, state or national level) is to listen to the citizens and do what is in the best interest of the voting public and be our representative. I do not see this happening.

Millions of jobs have been lost, programs are being cut, funding is slashed, vetoes are being thrown around like Tootsie Rolls at a 4th of July parade. What is being done to help the general public?

Not long ago, before I was laid off, I had to write a detailed description of how I spent my work week. I would like you, as an elected official, to do that for us too. How are you productively using your time to carry out your job to the best of your ability?
Show us how you are making a difference for the citizens of this city/county/State/country. List for me the things you have done to make improvements.
In every job I have ever worked I have been accountable to someone. Seems like the only time elected officials are held accountable is during an election year (if that).
As the old saying goes...THE BUCK STOPS HERE!!!
I want answers, not political spin...not pre-written responses that sugar coat everything. I want the 100% God's honest truth. Have some morals, have some integrity. Prove to me that you deserve to have the job you have.
Be willing to be called to the carpet for your mistakes, failures and promises you have not lived up to.

ALWAYS proud to be an American...just not too proud of the people making decisions for our government.

K6 Marketing is up and running

Greetings to all my friends and readers!

I am happy to announce that K6 Marketing is up and running. This vision of mine for the past few years is still in its infancy, but I am excited for the prospects of what it will become.

Since my last update, I have made a few changes to the "vision" of what K6 Marketing will do. Originally I was planning on just focusing on helping businesses and group promote on social media. Thanks to the advice from some well educated and experienced friends, I am broadening the horizons into trade marketing.

For those of you that know me...Trade marketing was what I did for 3 years at my previous job. In this current economy, trade/barter is making a huge comeback. I want to help businesses facilitate this in a B2B setting. It doesn't have to be the half price gift certificate trade I did before (though I will help any business weigh the options of doing those types of programs and what their best direction would be)...it's more about creating B2B relationships.

In addition, I will be starting out doing trade/barter works for service, depending on what the trade is for. Any of you that have or currently run a small business know how tough it is to get started, especially with limited cash flow.

My number one goal with K6 Marketing is to help people grow their business (or in the case of non-profits and groups - build awareness). Too many times in marketing it's about the almighty $$$ from the side of the marketing company. It's time to get back to growing local businesses and group, building true relationships that can be fulfilling to all parties involved and for the community in general.

Yes...I am coming to you for help. Word of mouth is still one of the best forms of advertising. If you know of a small business, non-profit or a group that could use my help and expertise, please have them contact me. Projects, time on my hands, reflections and more

Everyday I sit in amazement at how busy I am...while lacking gainful employment.

I do not leave the house for 8-10 hours a day to work for a company, yet the list of things to do always gets longer. For any of you that know me or have been following this blog for any period of time, you know that I have numerous projects going on at any point in time, or obligations that make me wish I could clone myself. Much is still the case now.

50% of my time if used for networking, reconnecting and job searching (***side note, it is really tough to find meaningful work in the marketing/communications field right now), the other 50% if filled with "side" projects.

Currently I am finishing up a recording/editing/mixing project for my daughters Girl Scout Troop that I have been working on for a month. In addition I am trying to get the K6Marketing project off the ground (finally got the simple proposal/package finished...if you are interested please email me at k6marketing@gmail.com) Then of course there is the always full "home to do" list.

I swear there just is not enough time in the day to get everything finished. If I try to spend extra time on one project, I feel like I am neglecting the others. One of my string suits has always been multi-tasking, but for once in my life I feel overwhelmed...at a time that you would think that I would be able to accomplish a ton.

On a personal side note...May is one of my favorite months because we celebrate the birthdays of my two oldest daughters (and June 2 is Noah's). Hard to believe my oldest (Mia) is turning 10 and finishing 4th grade. I look at 8 month old Alayna and think "Wow it seems like yesterday that Mia was this small"
Definitely a time of reflection, but more so a time to give thanks for the precious gifts that God has entrusted me with.

This is in response to EP's comment.

Today (May 6) marks the start of week 3 of unemployment. Just finished up my 8 day run on the Channel 10 Great TV Auction (which is always a blast for me)
The job search continues...have sent out about a dozen resumes, no interviews as of yet. No worries here.
Main project right now is getting K6 Marketing off the ground. After 3 years of doing trade with about 150 businesses in Milwaukee, I have decided to branch out and use what I learned from those businesses and help them promote their companies via Social Media. The beautiful thing about this...when I do land a full-time gig with another company, I can still do K6 Marketing on a part time basis. Getting ready to kick out the first proposals for business.

Some of you may be wondering (and I have been asked 100 times) "What do you want to do next?" Short answer is a job in Marketing or communications. Over the last week, I have felt drawn towards television...mainly because of a number of people have told me to go that way. I am taking time now to pray on it and ask for God's guidance before I take a leap.

Trying to knock out my long list of projects to be done...slowly but surely it is getting handled. Even without full time work, I am still as busy as ever.

Boy Scout Pack 56 at Dixon Elementary in Brookfield is pleased to announce they are organizing an "Other Important Stuff" Drive!

The scouts will have an opportunity to collect much needed donations for those less fortunate in our community. While we are all familiar with food drives and canned good drives . . . there are other items which are just as important:

Soap
Shampoo
Toothpaste
Toothbrushes
Dental Floss
Deodorant
Baby Wipes
Disposable Diapers, etc.

Social Media for Small Business...should we do it?

Social media has become the new “must-do” for businesses around the country, but the question still stands “is it worth while for small business”

As someone that has worked with small to mid sized businesses for the past three years, I believe that mainstream social media tools like Facebook and Twitter are excellent methods of promotion, if used correctly.

Is this perfect for every small business? Like many tools the quick answer is NO. Much of depends on the type of business you run and the people you are trying to reach out to.

The benefit of social media is it is free and extremely low risk for businesses to get involved in. There is the initial time commitment of getting accounts started up (Face book takes a little longer with logos, pictures and basic content), but it’s free.

Every small business should at least be open minded about the possibility of being involved in social media. Do you want to be the business that is left behind while you competition is out promoting to your potential customers? It’s like letting your competitor market their business right outside your front door.

Not sure about how it all works? Think Twitter and Facebook are just for the 18-24 demographic? Confused about the whole social media world? The best thing to do is talk to people that use Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and other social media program (whether for personal or business) and find out how they like them, their opinions and suggestions.

As I mentioned earlier…it costs you nothing to get started. Follow companies like @blatzliquor @DelafieldHotel and @footprints4you in Milwaukee (all on Twitter) to see what they are doing.

The immediate future

Today marks the beginning of the first full week of this new venture of trying to find a new job. I will admit I did not place too much of a sense of urgency the past few days on getting into a new career. Mainly because I was letting it settle in, but also because I wanted to take care of a few matters.

Now that Sunday morning has arrived, it is time to put the focus on moving forward. The big challenge is determining which direction I want to go in. I have spent the better part of 15 working in radio, something I have loved doing. Now comes the opportunity to move in a new direction, both by choice but also necessity. Media is a great industry to work in when things are good, but this past year or so has been tough.

I saw a number of good people lose jobs in early 2008 when The Fish/Word in Milwaukee was sold. Another friend lost his job last fall and still has not landed another radio job (he should never have been let go). Personally I have been let go from radio stations in Milwaukee 4 times, most times because of budget reasons.
Radio is not the only industry it's happening in, but I have had enough of it.

The popular questions I have been fielding "What are you going to do next?" and ""What do you want to do?" My answer for both...I am still trying to figure that out.
I have left the next step in the hands of God, which has floored quite a few people that I am stepping into this new journey with 100% faith. Am I free of worry? Certainly not...but I know the Lord is going to care for me and my family.

To honestly answer the question of what I will do next, what I want to do...I love communications and marketing. I am either going to try to hook-up with a marketing company or take the leap and head out on my own and start my own marketing business.
I have a passion and heavy interest in Social Media and see a major need for smaller companies to get on board this new media to promote and market their businesses.

One chapter ends, a new one begins

Well this is one I was hoping to hold off on for a few months, but it was not meant to be.
Tuesday April 21 (4 days shy of my 39th birthday) marks my last day with Saga Communications, a company I have been with for 3 years. My job (along with another) have been eliminated due to the economy, budgets and consolidation.
Let me say right here at the beginning...I hold no ill feelings towards the company, my GM, the employees, etc. This was nothing personal, it was 100% business.

This is not the first time this has happened to me and I am sure it will not be the last in my career. It is a challenge I need to face, with my family.

The main thing I am taking away from this, and I hope you all do the same, is that everything that happens is not on our time table, but on God's. We all must trust Him to guide us, provide for us and LOVE us.

Will it be easy?? NO! How long will it take before I find a new job? Only God knows.
I do know that no matter how tough things will get, I will still keep my full faith in Him. It's the only thing I can do.

I know there are some of you out there reading this that are going through the same thing, or maybe have health issues, marital problems, troubles with your kids, etc. Just remember that God does not give us more than we can handle...with Him!

The storm is always worst before it ends...and I know this one is just beginning.

Season of renewal

Well we just came off the most beautiful day we have seen in Milwaukee for about 4 months...75 degrees, sunny, absolutely perfect. Brought a sense of renewal to many in the area (unfortunately too many people were in a drunken stupor because of St. Patrick's day to enjoy it fully)

This is the time, on the Christian calendar, that we are preparing for the greatest 3 day weekend...the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Talk about the ultimate in seasons of renewal. In one quick 3 day weekend over almost 2,000 years ago, the sacrifice of the Son of GOD brought us eternal renewal.
Admittedly, as a father of four young children, we do the ritual of the "Easter Bunny" with egg hunts, baskets of goodies, etc...but we also instill in our children what the TRUE meaning of Easter is all about.
God sacrificing His only Son, in such a painful horrific manner, allowing each of us to become part God's Eternal family. All we have to do is give up our lives and live for Christ..show our love for Him and he will love us through eternity.

It saddens me to think how many people will miss out on this because of their beliefs or lack there of. Living a life for Christ is not easy, but it is not meant to be. We are expected to profess our faith, to live a life that is honoring of God..though many (myself included) do not do that well enough.

I will be the first to admit to the whole world...I am lacking as a follower of Jesus Christ. I am not doing all that I can, all that I should. My short falls are massive. But I am taking steps every single day to improve, to be better, to show my love and honor for what God has given me.

I think of the story of Arthur Blessit, a man who literally traveled to every country on earth, carrying a 12 foot cross to share the word of God. 40 years he spent walking all around the world, being ridiculed, threatened, jailed and even placed in front of a firing squad. That's what I call having full faith in God. A movie documenting his travels comes out March 27th and I full intend to go opening weekend to see it.

A question I ask of you (and of myself) "What are you doing to honor God, to live your life to praise Him"? I plan on taking time over the next few days to ponder this and humble myself with the answers.

Another movie I encourage you to see, either for the first time or again, "The Passion of the Christ" Forget about some of the stupid mistakes Mel Gibson has made...this movie will stir you, will humble you and will change you. I still remember the first time I saw it, with a group of pastors. It was the first movie I can remember where people walked out speechless, in utter awe of what was portrayed.

I yearn for the day I can share this movie with my children (my oldest turns 10 in may but I think she may still be too young for it). If you have not seen the "The Passion of the Christ", I encourage you to see it before Easter.

Just like the internet changed how we do things in the past decade, social media websites are the wave of now and the future.

It started heavy with MySpace…but has now exploded with Facebook, Twitter and Seesmic. Not only can you connect with friends and family, share pictures and video, but know businesses and groups can do target advertising to the masses on Facebook.

Sometimes I consider myself to be one step behind when it comes to the latest and greatest things (I just bought my first Blackberry this past week), but I am doing everything I can now to be near the forefront of the latest in social media.

It’s not about being cool and hip (which I already am…lol) but it’s about being ahead of the game when it comes to marketing things I do. I work in a medium that is constantly trying to re-invent itself when it comes to marketing, so anything new and exciting peaks my interest. Think about it…10 years ago who would have thought that Online news sites would overtake print media…or that Ipods would be running rampant?

I encourage all of you, no matter what business you are in, how old you are, or what you are involved in…don’t miss the bus when it comes to social media, as far as promoting something you are doing. Event, business, a blog, website…it doesn’t matter…Social media is the way to go.

What is the role of the father today?

Just after recording the latest video blog, I got into a conversation with one of my co-workers. He is a grandfather (in his early 50's) and he asked me "What is the role of the grandfather in today's world" This question got me to thinking more specifically about what role the father plays in today's society.

Things have changed dramatically since I was a kid in the 70's and 80's (let me note that I was raised in a single parent home by my mother, my dad and I really did not have much of a relationship).

I take a look at things today and wonder just how involved...really truly involved...fathers are in their kids lives today. Full disclosure, I know that I have many shortcomings when it comes to being a father. Whether it's because of work and my side jobs, distractions elsewhere or me being too self-embodied at times...I am not being the father that I know I can and should be.

Take a look around at teenage boys today...overall the level of respect is gone. No longer do we have the days of sons fearing the wrath of their fathers when they get home from work. You have kids trying to be badder than dad was, or worse (in the case in some less fortunate neighborhoods) kids emulating their father's bad deeds.

It's up to this generation of fathers (and grandfathers) to step up and start making an impact, otherwise the next generations of fathers will continue to spiral downwards. I know a handful of fathers that are doing a great job with their families, handling work, family time and everything else that comes with family life in 2009.

Americans are all too quick to point the blame elsewhere, whether it's TV and movies to music, the schools and the government...but honestly it comes down to what happens at home. God created men to be the leaders in the home, not just in the sense of being the dominant male figure, but also the spiritual leader. How we act is how our sons will act. How we portray ourselves to our daughters...that is the man they will marry.

I have someone in my life that I dearly want to say "Is this what you want your son to grow up to be" or "are you the type of man you want your daughters to marry?"

But first I have to take a step back and ask myself those same questions? The way I am today...is this how I want Noah to be when he is an adult? The man I am now...is this the man I want Mia, Isabela or Alayna marrying?

It all starts at home...with you...the MAN! It's never too late to become a better man, better husband, better father. Take stock in your life as it is today and decide "is this how I want my kids/grandkids to remember me?"

Honestly at this point...today...my answer is no!

As I have stated in the previous video blog, I am pushing myself this year to accomplish a number of things; to better myself, my family and hopefully in a small way the world.
I am not going to bore you with the full list, but some of the things that I hope all of you keep me accountable for this year.
1. Daily Bible Reading (One Year Bible...started this in 2007, got though 10 months)
2. Spend more quality time with my wife and kids
3. Read at least two new books a month (one spiritual growth, one personal growth)
4. Start weekly "Breakfast with Kids" (one of my kids each Friday, one on one time)
5. Try at least one NEW activity per month (will list a separate "bucket" list)
6. Volunteer/serve at least once per month (with the family)
7. Participate in at least 2 Bible/men's studies this year
8. Complete two educational/improvement classes
9. Golf at least 12 different courses this season
10. Re-Evaluate my "extra curricular" activities (side jobs, etc)

Not that amazing of a list...but I am working on that "Bucket" list. That will be the things that I want to at least try once this year. If anyone has any reasonable suggestions, please feel free to comment (they have to be legal in all 50 states, not likely to result in injury and will not cost too much)

Going through my "church bag" yesterday (yes I have a church bag, which holds my bible, moleskine, notebook for class and sermon notes, etc)I found notes from last January from the old Home Improvement class on what I can celebrate from the year past and what to strive for in the new year.

That got me to thinking, I need to take some time to focus on my blessings this year before I start moving into 2009. Most of my thoughts (of 2008) have been consumed by the frustrations and struggles of the past year (struggles at work, the flood, finances, etc).

This is my chance now to share with each of you the things I have been blessed by this year (as I wrote in my personal notes):
- The birth of my daughter Alayna Faith
- My family's health (no major issues this year)
- Another year at my job (stability)
- Reconnecting with my father and sisters
- helping launch a new Life Group at Spring Creek (and forging new friendships)
- Continued increase in my spiritual life/walk
- Involvement with my kids in Upwards basketball and soccer
- the help of Spring Creek and others (financially, etc)
- God's continued favor in my strengths (broadcasting, sports, coaching)
- the multitude of opportunities that have been opened for my family (through work, church)

This is not my way of bragging or saying "hey I had a better year than you", I just want to publicly declare the things that God has blessed me with this year...and this is just a partial list.

We tend to dwell on the bad things that have happened, asking for help in areas of need...but we tend to forget to praise the things that have blessed and fulfilled our lives.

Friends...take time over the next few days to sit down and write out what you have been blessed with this year. You may have had an extremely difficult year, but put all that aside and think about the good things in your life. Yes there will be things...you may surprise yourself.

This is going to lead into my new video blog about the new year and the main word...CHANGE!!

Christmas has really become a time of year for me to reflect...to look back on the year that has been...and to give thanks for what I have (yeah I know alot of people do that over Thanksgiving)

For anyone that really knows me and my family, this has been a tough year for us. This has probably been the financially toughest year we have ever faced (like so many other families out there). We have had many a day wondering "how are we going to pay the mortgage", "how are we going to pay for this car repair" "are we going to be able to afford Christmas".

Bottom line...these are things that I should not be dwelling on, spending all my time and energy worrying about. Do not dwell on what you do not have, but offer up Thanks and Praise for what you do have.

I am thankful for the fact that, while so many other people have lost jobs, I have a job with an excellent company. I am grateful that I have a decent home to live in that keeps my wife and children safe, warm and protected...while there are others that have lost their homes because of the economy or some tragedy.
Thank God that my family and I are healthy (minus the typical child colds, coughs and sniffles)...I know of many people struggling this year with serious illness and have know a few that are no longer with us.
I am eternally grateful to my heavenly Father for the 4 beautiful children I have...knowing there are couples out there trying desperately to have just one child, while other have lost children due to illness, tragedy or other means.
Praise God that I have a church to worship in, with a church family that is supportive and caring, I know in my heart there are others who either choose not to go to church or feel unwelcome...and in other countries, worshiping our Almighty God would lead to ridicule, torture, even death...just for believing.

There is so much more I can write...but know that I am thankful for the small and the big things in my life and really do not take anything for granted...for it can all be gone in an instant. But above all...no matter what may happen tomorrow, next week or next year, I know my Father, my Amazing God, HE will provide for me!!

Christmas is coming...new thoughts

Hard to believe that Christmas is only 2 weeks away....and I will admit I have gotten caught up in the "hoopla" of Christmas. I was one of the crazy masses out on Black Friday...I have been traveling around looking for the latest, greatest deal to buy.
I am most disappointed that once again I have left behind the TRUE meaning of Christmas....Jesus Christ.

Don't get me wrong...I have NOT gone 100% Santa/Happy Holiday/Don't show me a Nativity. What I mean is I am once again caught up in the fervor of presents under the tree for the kids. Every year I want to do more for others...but it always comes a little too late. I keep reading stories of what others have been doing and I think "wow I should be doing something like that with my family" Not for the attention or accolades, but because we have been blessed again this year and we need to do something to give back.

This year I am helping the kids with something that we did last year with our oldest daughter Mia. Once again the kids are running a Christmas toy drive for the Milwaukee Rescue Mission...for two reasons. One (and most importantly) is to give to others that are in need, those that do not have what we have. Secondly, to teach the kids the to appreciate what they do have and to help "the least of these". It has been a challenge, but Mia and Noah are doing a great job with it.

Have been watching video posts of Gary Vaynerchuk (thanks to J-Dizzle for leading me on to him)...and getting a lot of great ideas of things to do, not just with my work, but personally. Which leads me to wanting to start a video blog.
For those of you that know me well...you'll immediately say "Jon-you have tried stuff like his before with the radio show, podcasts, blogs etc" Yes my friends you are right...but I am feeling this is something that can explode.

Hopefully before Christmas I can roll out the first sets of videos (if I win the cheap Flip Video I am bidding on at EBay)...but the question is...What will the Video posts be about.

I had thought of doing an "Edge of Sports" video blog....or something with wrestling (yes another one of my secret passions). Honestly what I am thinking of doing is actually combining my work and some of my strengths. That's all I can say for now (don't want anyone stealing my idea) but lets just say...it will be a combination of the work I do on the Channel 10 auction, what I have done on the radio and my current work with the Online Radio Outlet.

Difficult times all around

Seems like that is all we are hearing about nowadays...everyone is having difficult times. The nation's economy is in the tank, companies are recording multi-million and billion dollar losses, corporations are filing for bankruptcy, shutting down stores, factories, even entire divisions.
People are getting laid off or fired everywhere...personally I know of at least a dozen people who have been effected over the past month or so (Thank God it has not been me so far)
The mantra we have heard over the past few months has been "We need change"...but honestly the change needs to start at home first. Personal change needs to happen before we ask for everyone else to change.

I am going through that right now...as a still "baby Christian" (less than 3 years since I dropped to my knees)...trying to make positive changes to my life. It continues to be a struggle as I have let many things on the outside effect me.
Thankfully I have a strong and supportive wife, and excellent church family and some great people I can turn to, that have helped me in this journey.

Was watching part of Evan Almighty today (love Steve Carell) and early on in the movie, his mantra (as he was running for Congress) was "Change the World". Looking at it from my perspective, we all CAN change the world, but it has to start with changing ourselves first. Don't expect everyone else to change if you are not willing to do it yourself.

Random Thoughts 10/22/2008

13 days...thats how much time is left until we elect a new President of the United States. More than anytime that I can remember, this election has more future implications than ever before.

The economy is in the tank, the war in Iraq has reached and passed it's apex, and lots of people are worried about not only the immediate future but years down the road.

To be perfectly honest, I don;t think either John McCain or Barrack Obama are the "Man" to lead us out of the trouble we are in. It has literally come down two the "lesser of two evils" election. Truly, the American govermental system needs an overhaul. The voice of the people has been silenced, our vote does not insure anything anymore.

I wish there was a candidate on some level that would finally come out and say "I would love to promise lower taxes, better health insurance, and new jobs for everyone...but honestly it is out of my control. I can only do what my fellow Congressmen/Senators will allow to go through. I will do the best that my God given abilities allow me to do"

Imagine how that would shake up the political establishment!!

The World Series starts tonight and it will be a ratings juggernaut...NOT.
Philadelphia and Tampa Bay...no one at the beginning of the season would have picked this as the World Series. Personally I am happy (would only be happier if the Brewers were in it). You don't have the cash happy monsters of the Yankees, Red Sox, Cubs and Dodgers in it...but best of all two former Brewers are in the Fall Classic.

Geoff Jenkins who toiled on miserable teams in Milwaukee for a decade is now on the Phillies. Gabe Gross who was ostracized for having Mercy Me as his "entrance" music is on the Rays. Couldn't happen to two nicer guys. I only met Geoff Jenkins twice, but have a great memory. It was 2000, and my oldest daughter Mia was about 18 months old. Geoff was doing an appearance at Sentry. I have a great picture of him holding Mia in his lap. He was kind, cordial and a great example of a friendly athlete.

As a Christian, I immediately gravitated to Gabe Gross as a ball player. He wore his faith on his sleeve and was proud to admit he is a follower of Jesus Christ...but of course the jaded media in this town (namely certain sports talk guys who work for a company that just fired a friend of fine) would ridicule him and make fun of him everytime Mercy Me's "I Can Only Imagine" blared over the Miller Park sound system.

Though only one will walk away with a World Series ring, I wish both Geoff Jenkins and Gabe Gross the best in the fall classic

Fall is quickly taking a swing towards winter as the dreaded for letter word of Wisconsin hit weather reports for Sunday...SNOW. Having lived here for 99% of my life, it should not come as a shock, but every late October/early November it does hit me like a frozen snowball between the eyes.
Seems just like yesterday we were basking on the 70's, sun, shorts and lawn chairs. Now as I am waiting for the leaves to finally fall of the maple tree in my backyard I have to think about getting the snow blower tuned up before the first "Big One" on the season comes.

On that note...Halloween is right around the corner (Trick or Treat in Milwaukee is this Sunday). Don't bother coming to my house, because we will not be handing out candy. Couple of thoughts for Trick or Treat:
1. If you are over the age of 10, you better have an actual costume on if you are going trick or treating. I am not talking about the $3 mask and a pillow case.
2. Parents...don't just drop you van load of kids in a neighborhood you don;t know to Trick or Treat. I Hate That (disclaimer...yes I do take my kids elsewhere, but it is neighborhoods where we have family) I can guarantee the 4 or 5 car loads of kids I have seen don't know anyone in our neighborhood.
3. STOP HANDING OUT THE BLACK AND ORANGE PEANUT BUTTER CANDIES. We didn't like them 30 years ago, why would kids now like them???

Has spring finally arrived?

April 4th...temperatures are up, the roar of the crowd from Miller park and tulips are blooming at home...it must be spring now.

This has been a tough winter. I am not one of those people that typically complains about winter in Wisconsin. I have lived her for 36 of my 38 years, and I really do love the four seasons. This year though...it took a toll on me.

Seemed like every time we turned around, Mother Nature was punching us in the gut with another round of snow. Thankfully I was not in town for the last big blow on Good Friday.

I am happy to see spring here...it is a season of renewal...all things start new again. The birds chirping in my yard, the little animals scurrying for food, the brown grass will turn to green, the buds on the trees will become leaves and everything else will be in bloom.

I got a taste of it over the Easter week with a trip to the south. It is amazing after months of snow, and tons of drab colors on the landscape, the vibrant green of the grass and trees really hits you.

Yeah spring will mean having to cleaning the garage, reseed the lawn, cut the grass, pull weeds and all the fun things a homeowner gets to do...but it will be well worth it. Just remember folks, winter is only 7 months away!!

End of an era, Part 3

Time to close yet another chapter in this first part of 2008.

Over the past 10 weeks I have had the privilege of coaching two great teams for Upwards basketball at my church, Spring Creek. The Lady Hawks and the Boilermakers were made up of some great young boys and girls that have created some great memories for me.

Juggling WLC basketball and two Upwards teams was a challenge for me, mainly from a scheduling aspect, but the time and effort were more than worth it. While these kids and their parents thought they gained the most out of it, I believe that I did as a person and as a Christian.

Through working with these great kids, I realized the importance of letting kids be kids, something that has really gotten away from me as a father over the past few months.

I loved watching some of my younger players step from being uncertain in their abilities at the beginning of the season to being confident and string in what they were doing at the end of the season.

While Upwards is geared towards not worrying about wins and losses, it was always great seeing the reactions of the players when the final horn would sound and we would be on the winning end. For my boys, the Boilermakers, that came a lot in the beginning, but not so much at the end (expect for the 2^nd to last game with a big 39-18 win)

My girls, the Lady Hawks rolled off five straight wins at the end of the season, including a huge season finale against a team that was stacked with talent.

While it was tough walking away from the WLC basketball season, seeing the end of Upwards basketball season really pulls at my heart. This will be the final time I will see many of these boys and girls, even if they return next season. I have grown to love each of these kids, for all their different talents and abilities.

It truly is a humbling experience as a coach watching your players go out on the floor and succeed in the things you have taught then through out the short season! Even the simplest little things would bring a smile to my face.

Too all my kids (and the parents) THANK YOU for a wonderful season. I am truly sad that it is over. It has been a pleasure to be a part of your children’s lives over the past 10 weeks!

Now it’s time for the beginning of a new era….no more ends!

End of an era Pt 2

Friday and Saturday came and went...with the best possible outcome.

The Wisconsin Lutheran College Warrior women over came injury and adversity through out the season and gelled together to win the NAC Conference tournament championship on Saturday night in front of the home crowd.

It was a great night for me, as the broadcaster, having watched this team all season long. Though I am not on the court with them, I became overwhelmed with emotion as the final seconds ticked off the clock and I was able to announce "the Warriors are the Northern Athletics Conference Tournament champions"

Don't get me wrong...this is nothing about ME...it's about these talented young women that work for months, while still being students, to play a game they love. I was proud to see women that I have grown to respect walk away with a well earned accolade.

More so for our two graduating seniors, Breanne Duebner and Emily Laete...who get to do what most athletes don't. go out as winners. No matter the outcome of Saturday's game, Bre and Emily would have walked off winners regardless. There tireless work ethic, leadership and love for what they do not only propelled the Warriors to the championship, but has left a legacy for the players that will be here next season.

To Emily and Bre, I love you both, have enjoyed watching you play and will miss you immensely next season.

More random thoughts....
*Is it spring yet??? It is not March and I still fee there is no end in sight. I love the 4 seasons (five if you include construction season), but this winter has taken a toll on me.

*I am irritated with Milwaukee sports media...the areas most successful sports team, The Milwaukee Wave indoor soccer team, gets absolutely no respect in Milwaukee. During one news cast on Sunday night (station withheld to protect the not-so-innocent) they talked about the Bucks (twice), Brewers for 3 minutes (which I am OK with), NASCAR, more NBA and of course Brett favre's Tractor Watch...but no mention of the Wave's 17-4 win at home.
Coming off a couple of days where the legend of Milwaukee soccer, Michael King's retirement announcement made headlines, the Wave has fallen into the abyss once again.

End of an era

Tough night last night as my Wisconsin Lutheran College Warriors men's basketball team lost in the first round of the NAC Tournament to the Lakeland Muskies.

It brought to a close a great season, filled with excitement, heart ache and action. But most of all it brought to a close the great college careers of two great individuals.

Marcus Zondag and Nate Sorum will not go down in the annals of college basketball lore as two of the best players ever to hit the hardwood, but you will never meet two young men with more heart and desire to play the game.

Each and everytime they hit the court they would live it all out there, win or loss. They were the epitome of leaders on and off the court.

I've had the pleasure of watching both Marcus and Nate play since they were sophomores and it's been a blast watching them develop as players.

After last nights game I had a chance to interview both of them...and it was one of the tougher interviews I have done inn 15 years of radio. Both guys knew it was the end of the road, they were obviously upset, but they were gracious enough to spend 5 or minutes with me talking about the season, their careers and their future.

God bless Marcus Zondag and Nate Sorum for what they have done for WLC and the legacy they have left behind!

End of a crazy run

Well I have to tell you I am happy to send the end of February coming up...not because of the snow, the weather or spring right around the corner.

March means the end of the craziest two months I have had in a long time. Juggling my main job, Play by Play for Wisconsin Lutheran College basketball, coaching two Upwards basketball teams, plus a multitude of other things has meant way too much time on the road, scrambling from one event to another and hoping that my kids haven't forgotten who I am.

Don't get me wrong...I am far from complaining because I love all that I do, but being a person that has a hard time saying NO to people (it's tough when your pastor calls you out on it)..sometimes I overload myself.

I am truly blessed to have the opportunities to do what I do and to be able to use the skills and abilities that God has given me. It is going to be nice to have a little bit of downtime before the next hectic schedule comes up.

Out of all of this...it has become apparent that I need to take sometime to prioritize what I need to do from what I want to do. My Men's Fraternity group, plus HI2 at Spring Creek Church have helped me realize this.

Next time any of you see me...I will not be running so much (unless I am chasing down Bella) and I may be a little more calm!!

Random thoughts...
- Wasn't the lunar eclipse last week AMAZING. I took a few minutes to watch with my kids and you have to be in awe of another of God's awesome creations in action.

- I am so tired already of the political ads on TV and radio. For once I would love to have a candidate on either side come out and say "I don't have total control. I am not going to make empty promises. I will work with the House and Senate who have ultimate control over taxes, laws, etc"

- An article on JSOnline states that 78.4% of Americans are Christians..but of that 78% how many are really Christians. What is their definition of being a "Christian"? That they believe in God? how many of that 78% actually go to church each week, read their bibles and live a God-fearing/honoring life? I am far from the perfect Christian, but I am doing my best on a daily basis.
That's what is wrong with our society...too many C&E Christians that talk the talk but don't walk the walk. That's why our TV's are strewn with trash that would have been limited to pay cable channels 10 years ago, why every news stand has a dozen magazines with scantily clad women adorning the covers and why true positive role models are over shadowed by the problems of Brittany Spears and such.
As my pastor says, all too many of us are living a life of "cruise control Christianity" and not walking in a closer walk with Jesus Christ. We need a Spiritual Revolution, and it starts with each person, then their families and so on. Imagine the impact we can make is we all start walking with Jesus on a daily basis...setting the example for others and letting them see God's light shining through us!

Re-evaluating

February 14th...Valentine's Day
A day filled with hearts, cards, candy and love.

No I am not going to ruminate about love...just find it ironic that I will post my first blog (at least on this site) on Valentine's Day.

Couple of random thoughts:
- Today is the final day of broadcasting for 105.3 The Fish here in Milwaukee. A great Contemporary Christian music station that has graced Milwaukee for the past 6 years, recently sold from Salem Communications to EMF, which is changing it to the satellite fed K-Love. Same style of music, no local personalities. This is sad as I see people I have worked with lose their jobs. For any one that has know me for at least a couple of years, you know my relationship with Salem and some of the people was not always the greatest (much caused by me), but I never wish this on anyone.

- As a husband and father, sometimes life gets the best of me. I am seeing that happening right now, as my chaotic schedule of work and basketball broadcasts for Wisconsin Lutheran College seems to be starting to take a toll on my family. I guess that happens when on any given weekday your kids are luck to see you for more than 20 minutes.

- Why is it that the sporting world (mainly fans and media) are always so tuned in to and interested in the negative stories (i.e. Michael Vick, Roger Clemens/steroids, OJ) So many great positive sports stories and all we care about is who shot what into whose body and what laws are being broken. And people wonder why the youth of America is so messed up?

- I have lived in Wisconsin for 36 of my 38 years...and this is the first time I can honestly say...I AM SICK OF SNOW!!! Seems like every other day we are hearing reports of another 3-5 inches of snow, with the occasional 10-12 inch blast. When will we see the green grass again?
